On July 3, 2025, the Economic Forum for Family Empowerment in Scotland hosted the Rising Stars Youth Summer Holiday Workshop, an engaging and educational workshop aimed at empowering young participants with knowledge about dementia. The session was the second of the series of sessions designed to foster empathy and understanding among youth regarding a condition that affects many families.
Julie Turner, our resource person led the session characterized by its interactive format, which provided a platform for “the rising stars” to delve deeply into understanding dementia. She covered very critical aspects of dementia, including understanding dementia, explanation of how dementia affects the brain, including changes in memory, reasoning, and behavior, practical support strategies that includes effective communication strategies, creating safe and comforting environments, and engaging in activities that promote connection and joy.
The rising stars were encouraged to ask questions and share experiences, creating a supportive environment where open dialogue was promoted. This interaction not only enhanced their understanding of the disease but also emphasized the importance of compassion and support for those affected. They were also encouraged to think critically about how they can contribute positively to their communities, whether through volunteering, raising awareness, or simply being present for a loved one in need.
Special appreciation goes out to our kids for their amazing impacts, dedication and commitment. Also to our partner “Age Scotland” for their wonderful insights and knowledge shared in empowering youth to become advocates for those with dementia.
